IIGA Executive Committee bowled over in Guernsey!

IIGA Executive Committee bowled over in Guernsey!

The Executive Committee of the NatWest International Island Games Association (IIGA) visited Guernsey for their annual meeting at the end of March, and to find out more about plans for the Guernsey 2021 Games.

As well as discussing the 2021 Games, the Chair of the 2019 Gibraltar Games, Linda Alvarez, was also in attendance to update the Committee on the Gibraltar Games, which take place in July this year. Linda is looking forward to welcoming all guests to Gibraltar and said ‘We have done everything that is possible in order to make every single one of our visitors feel welcome to Gibraltar. Our sport organisers are ready for an intense week of competition’.

Organisers of the Guernsey 2021 Games and members of GIGA met with the Executive Committee to take them on a tour of the Island. They visited a number of venues that will be used in the 2021 Games, including Footes Lane, the Guernsey Tennis Club and Badminton Halls. In the evening, the group went to the Indoor Bowls Centre where they competed in a friendly tournament, under the supervision of members of the Indoor Bowls Association, including World Champion Alison Merrien.

Jorgen Pettersson, the Chair of the IIGA Executive Committee, said ‘As one of the founding member islands of the IIGA, Guernsey has shown great leadership in the overall construction of the Association. When the NatWest International Island Games returns to Guernsey 2021, it will be the third time the island has hosted the world class event our Friendly Games has become. As a role model Guernsey is an inspiration for all the other islands. Right now we are all focusing on Gibraltar but after the Closing Ceremony, the stage belongs to Guernsey!’.

Dame Mary Perkins, Chair of the Guernsey 2021 Organising Committee, said ‘It was a pleasure to meet up with the IIGA Executive Committee and show them around the Island. Many of the Committee came to the Island for 2003 Games and have fond memories of the Guernsey Games, and we are working hard to make 2021 just as memorable’.
