Gibraltar is a self-governing British Overseas Territory, whose economy now embraces financial services, on-line gambling, shipping and tourism.
The Rock of Gibraltar, 426m high and composed of Jurassic limestone, forms the southern tip of the Iberian peninsula and the southern-most part of Europe, only 14km from Morocco. Most of the Rock's upper area is covered by a nature reserve, home to 230 Barbary macaques or tail-less monkeys. Interesting historical features include the prehistoric St Michael’s cave, a fine twelfth century Moorish castle and a network of tunnels built in the eighteenth century and WWII.
