If you’ve caught any of the action at the pool this week, you might have wondered why Team Shetland, usually easily recognisable in its Scottish blues and whites, is wearing orange this year.
The colour change is a heartfelt tribute to past team member Luke Malcolmson, who sadly passed away in April earlier this year, having lost his five-month battle with Leukaemia. In his honour, the team is sporting the Leukaemia awareness colour – orange to further support the fundraising efforts Luke’s family and friends have been doing for the Teenage Cancer Trust.
The Teenage Cancer Trust is the only UK cancer charity to offer every young person facing cancer the ‘best care and support’. From sporting challenges to auctions and a JustGiving page, so far £80,000 has been raised in Luke’s memory.
Head Coach of the Shetland Swimming Association, Pétur Pétursson, told us that 21-year-old Luke had a successful swimming career and had swum for Shetland at two previous Island Games. As a squad member, Pétur said: “he was a close friend to many of the guys here”.
