Prisoners' sign points the way to Guernsey2023
Guernsey Prison has been doing their bit to help get the island prepared for hosting the Guernsey2023 NatWest International Island Games.
Not only have they been helping tidy up a few of the venues, but prisoners in the workshop have also created a fantastic colourful wayfinding sign pointing to all 24 of the member islands.
‘The whole workshop team, prisoners and staff, have worked really hard on this project and got it completed in less than two weeks,’ said Kerry Tardif from Guernsey Prison.
‘The results have far exceeded my expectations and it has been amazing to see how enthused the team have been about the project.
‘This type of project enables prisoners to develop and practice practical skills which can potentially be beneficial in future employment whilst also benefitting from the results of positive communication and teamwork,’ she said.
‘I’m just really pleased that the prisoners have been able to make such a positive contribution and once again I am amazed at the skills and abilities of the team to come up with the goods once again,’ said Prison Governor John de Carteret.
The prisoners are really proud of their work.
‘I’ve not worked on anything like this before – I’ve really enjoyed it!’ said Ross.
‘I always like to be challenged and would like to do more projects like this. It’s turned out better than we thought. We’ve all put our handprints on the planter to show how many of us worked on it,’ he said.
‘We are all proud to be part of this in such a creative way,’ said Lewis.
‘Organising such a huge event as the NatWest International Island Games requires the whole community to pull together so it was great to be approached by Guernsey Prison with their offer to help,’ said Amanda Hibbs, Communications & Events Director for Guernsey 2023.
‘Not only have they helped tidy up a couple of our venues but the fantastic sign they have created will be a big talking point up at our Chill in the Park site at Beau Sejour.
‘It will be great place to grab a selfie!’ she said.
‘We are glad to have made a contribution to the Island Games and join in the community spirit,’ added Kerry.
‘Good luck to all the competitors taking part in the event!’
